Buckeye Cabin

on Big Manistique Lake, Curtis, MI

History

Buckeye was built in 1954, as the second cabin in Smith's Haven Resort. Known as #3 (the office was #1) until 1974, when Martha Lou Diem, who had designed the cabin when her uncle Ed Smith was building the resort, purchased it and renamed it "Buckeye".

Big Manistique Lake is nearly 16 square miles (10,130 acres) and is home to walleye, perch, large-mouth and small-mouth bass, northern pike, and blue gills. Maximum depth is 21 feet. Steady winds out of the northwest make for great sailing and an easy return to port. Buckeye is on the south shore of the lake.
